BlastWorks: Build, Trade, Destroy

April 23rd, 2008

Now here’s something truly innovative. It’s the game that’s going to revolutionize the way you play your Wii. In its simplest form, Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy is the first shmup (short for “shoot ‘em up”) game for Wii. What makes this game stand out from your average shooter is the “stickiness” of your ships that lets you attach (or “glom” as we say here) enemy parts onto your ship. This gameplay dynamic was first created by Kenta Cho, the creator of Tumiki Fighters, the online game Blast Works was inspired by.  See below for a shot of this cool feature in action.

Behold the Glom!

If that wasn’t enough to get you interested, this just might. Blast Works features one of the easiest-to-use content editors I’ve seen in a game. We are literally putting the developers’ tools directly in your hands. You can build anything from set pieces, to ships, to enemy ships, to boss ships, to complete levels; pretty much anything you can dream up. What’s truly cool is you can build a ship made of a triangle, a square and a circle, assign a cool bullet pattern and drop it into a level. Two minutes - tops. It can be that easy…

On the other end of the spectrum, if you fancy yourself a game designer, you can really get detailed with hundreds of shapes in you creation. Use the Advanced Enemy Editor, for example, to add patterns, movements and destructible parts to a behemoth end-level boss. Then drop it (or him, or her!) into a level that you create inspired by the street you work on, complete with cars, storefronts, pink trees, purple robots – you name it.

Think I’m over-selling it?  Check out the screen below to see what our QA staff came up with.  These are guys who play games just like you and me, not designers!

This is just the tip of the iceberg.  Once you’ve created your masterpieces, you’ll want to show them off and share them, right? Get ready for something that’s never been done on the Wii before!  We’re giving you the ability to upload your creations and share them with the online world at www.BlastWorksDepot.com. This is so easy and fun to use, you’ll find yourself checking it as often as your Myspace account.  Once registered on the site for FREE – you’ll just provide some general info and your Wii console number – you can post creations to the site straight from the Wii and download the creations of others to play or edit on your Wii at your leisure. You can rate content, send content to friends, send or receive friend requests and more!

So check out Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy coming in May at www.blastworksgame.com and www.blastworksdepot.com launching with the game.

The Real-Time Strategy genre has been prevalent in the PC Games market for years but very few RTS titles have been released for this generation of handheld gamers. In addition, many of the RTS titles can be less approachable for more casual players who enjoy the gameplay dynamic but are intimidated by overly complex mechanics.

We just released Eco-Creatures: Saves the Forest, which is one of the few RTS titles available on the DS. Better yet, it’s very easy to pick up and play while featuring strategic play, a creative Land Make editor, and local and internet multiplayer support. Throw in 40 missions, creature evolution, magical powers and a wide range of bosses and it’s clear that Eco-Creatures has all the makings of a solid RTS in addition to its unique environmental theme.

Eco-Creatures takes the RTS away from the monotonous task management and creates a fun, entertaining experience that keeps you on your toes. With adorable characters, unique magic spells, menacing enemies, and fun situational comedy, you never realize that you’re playing a true hard core RTS.

Thanks for dropping by. Stay tuned for the next post on Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy.
